DOST-V holds simultaneous nationwide earthquake drill

Employees of the regional office and provincial science and technology centers of the Department of Science and Technology Region V (DOST-V) participated in the second quarter of the national simultaneous earthquake drill (NSED) on 09 June 2022.

NSED is a quarterly major initiative spearheaded by the Office of Civil Defense to improve earthquake preparedness through regular drills and exercises among line agencies and local government units.

After hearing the drill alarm, all employees followed the "duck, cover, and hold" safety procedure and evacuated to a designated safe place.

Ms. Lhea Dyn B. Bellen, DOST-V focal person on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) reiterated that participating in this campaign is an opportunity to test the knowledge, efficiency, and usefulness of systems and policies regarding earthquake safety protocols amidst the pandemic.

The said activity is not merely for compliance to Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Memorandum Circular No. 29 series of 2022, but a call for strong and coordinated action to prevent loss of lives and injuries.

An improved culture of resilience is necessary to mitigate hazards and reduce risk, particularly for disaster-prone regions in the Philippines like Bicol.

On its part, DOST will continue to support government initiative through its ‘Ihanda ang Bayan sa Pamamagitan ng Agham” and “Science for Safer Communities”.
