PSTO Catanduanes director addresses educators at dengue prevention and control seminar

The start of the rainy season was officially declared last May 18, it was followed shortly by a warning from the Department of Health (DOH) against a rise in many diseases, including dengue.

The Proclamation No. 1204 series of 1998 also known as the National Awareness Month is celebrated every whole month of June. Dengue has been considered by the DOH as an all-year-round disease that rises in incidence during the rainy season due to the presence of more breeding places for disease-causing Aedes aegypti type of mosquitoes.

The School Governance and Operation Division of Schools Division of Catanduanes conducted a face-to-face information operation for dengue prevention and control last June 15, 2022, at School Division Office located at San Roque, Virac. Engr. Marie Grace T. Molina of PSTC Catanduanes has been invited as a keynote speaker. Representatives of each school in Catanduanes attended the event.

Engr. Molina discussed how the viral infection is transmitted through the bite of dengue-infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the symptoms, prevention, and treatments. The highlight of the discussion was the Administrative Order 2018-0021 "Guidelines for the Nationwide Implementation of the Enhanced 4S-Strategy against Dengue, Chikungunya & Zika."

As key interventions, Engr. Molina encouraged everyone to be prime movers in controlling the mosquito population and avoiding possible dengue deaths within the community through the 4S strategy. The 4S stands for: "Search and destroy" mosquito-breeding sites, employ "Self-protection measures" (i.e. daily use of mosquito repellent), "Seek early consultation," and "Support fogging/spraying" only in hotspot areas where an increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.

BIDVMP is a collaboration of various strategies for dengue prevention and control that was initiated and implemented by the DOST, Departments of Health (DOH), Education (DepEd), Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was also tackled. Together with the ABKD (Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue) another anti-dengue advocacy campaign that support DOH’s objective to reduce the cases of dengue in the country. ABKD seeks to enforce the government’s drive against dengue by inviting community involvement through clean-up drives and public awareness. School officials are urged to partake in search and destroy activities at the school premises. Unfortunately, these two programs were unable to continue due to shortage of fund but looking at its effectiveness, PSTC Catanduanes together with DepED Catanduanes is planning to revive the said dengue early warning systems, on provincial setting.
