PSTO Sorsogon, LGU Barcelona conduct orientation in preparation for possible community-based project

The Department of Science and Technology V thru PSTO-Sorsogon in collaboration with the LGU Barcelona conducted the “Orientation on DOST’s Community-Based Program and DOST-ITDI’s Developed Technologies” on 23 September 2022 at Agrihope Tesda Farm School, Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Barcelona, Sorsogon. The activity is anchored on the agenda on the possible interventions based on the needs of the community discussed in the recently conducted meeting with Hon. Cynthia Falcotelo-Fortes last 14 September 2022.

“The LGU continually support in value-adding and providing livelihood opportunities to the farmers in cooperation with the DOST and other government agencies.” said by Mayor Cynthia Falcotelo-Fortes as delivered by Ms. Jona A. Falcotelo, SB Member, Committee on Agriculture during the activity. Initially, twenty (20) farmers from three barangays namely Barangay Sta. Cruz, San Ramon and Fabrica attended and were chosen as possible processors. Technology-based processing is feasible because of the sustainability of raw materials in the municipality. It was validated through the conducted Technology Needs Assessment of the PSTC Sorsogon team. Engr. Sandro B. Noguera, Provincial S&T Director of Sorsogon and Mr. Bon Carlo D. Salonga, PTA-I, discussed on the possible interventions including the DOST-ITDI’s Coconut Processing Technologies on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), Coconut vinegar and Coconut By-Products. Also, mushroom and banana ketchup production were discussed.

“Napakaswerte naming magsasaka na pwedeng matulungan ng DOST at sa patuloy na pagsuporta ng LGU saamin sa pamumuno ng aming Mayor, lalo na’t madami ang niyog at saging sa aming lugar at patuloy na bumababa ang presyo ng copra at niyog sa merkado, kumbaga ‘value-adding’ at dagdag na pagkukunan ng aming pangkabuhayan,” said by one of the farmers.
